How the Predator Z-3 Is Built

The Z-3 uses the same I-Match spliced maple foundation as the 314-3 but with a completely different front-end construction designed specifically to maximize spin and minimize deflection:

I-Match 10-Piece Spliced Maple with V-Tek Construction

Like the 314-3, the Z-3 starts with 10 precisely matched triangular sections of North American maple bonded using Predator's patented I-Match process, each piece individually tested for density, mass, and stiffness before pairing. The Z-3 adds Predator's V-Tek front-end construction, which uses a proprietary material formula in the ferrule section that is both stronger and lighter than standard ferrule materials. This further reduces the front-end mass beyond what the spliced construction alone achieves, giving the Z-3 the lowest deflection of any Predator wood shaft.

Conical-Hybrid Taper — 11.85mm

Where the 314-3 uses a Pro taper that stays consistent for an extended section, the Z-3 uses a Conical-Hybrid taper, a gradual, continuous widening from tip to joint with no flat section near the tip. This gives the Z-3 a softer, more flexible feel at contact compared to the 314-3, and the narrower 11.85mm diameter reduces the contact area between tip and cue ball. Together these characteristics make it easier to apply spin with less effort, and give players a more sensitive feel for what the cue ball is doing at the moment of contact. The tradeoff is that it is less forgiving than the 314-3, stroke mechanics matter more on a narrower, softer shaft.

V-Tek Ferrule with Fiber Tip Silencer — 0.40" (10.1mm)

The Z-3 uses a shorter V-Tek ferrule at 0.40 inches compared to the 314-3's 0.50-inch Thermax ferrule. V-Tek is Predator's proprietary ferrule material — not a standard phenolic, developed specifically to be lighter and stronger than conventional options. The V-Tek Fiber Tip Silencer sits between the ferrule and tip, dampening the sound and feel of the hit in a way that some players find allows them to better read contact quality on softer shots.

Predator Victory Medium Tip — Installed Standard

Every Z-3 ships with the Predator Victory layered tip in Medium hardness installed as standard, the same 8-layer leather tip used on the 314-3. The shaft weighs approximately 4.0oz and is 29 inches in length, consistent with the rest of the Predator wood shaft lineup.
